Exposed aggregate, a decorative concrete finish, is making a comeback among builders and homeowners. Exposed aggregate is achieved when the thin layer of cement is removed from the surface; this exposes the aggregates that are an integral part of the concrete such as various types of stone and sands. Exposed aggregate finishes fare extremely well in heavy traffic areas due to its “pre worn” appearance. In typical troweled and broom finished applicatications heavy traffic will naturally wear through the cement layer that is carefully broom finished or toweled into the concrete. This natural wearing will expose the aggregate below in just those affected areas, causing the broom or troweled finish to look inconsistent.
An exposed aggregate finish maintains its quality appearance from the time of its initial install till the end of its useful life.
Low Maintenance
Exposed aggregate surfaces are the lowest maintenance finish offered. Sealing an exposed aggregate finish after the first complimentary sealing is not critical to maintain its great appearance and texture. This is contrary to stamped concrete applications where sealers are responsible for bringing out colors and providing slip resistance.
